Provincial election bill fails to be passed in Iraq

August 6, 2008

Hmmm, a critical provincial election bill failed to be passed in Iraq before its Parliament’s recess. The passage of this bill would have allowed provincial elections to be held this year, which would have been ideal because Sunni politicians boycotted the last elections and are therefore underrepresented in the government and itching for some power. Everyone had been hoping that Iraq’s legislature would get serious and take advantage of the relative calm the country has been experiencing to pass the bill. Unfortunately, without an exceptional session (held during the recess), the bill won’t be able to be passed until next year, and the provincial elections will be delayed for a dangerously long time.

Bias disclosure: I do not know all of the circumstances surrounding the failure of the passage of the bill, and maybe Iraqi politicians actually had some very good reasons for delaying it. But it sure seems as though this a dangerous failure for the country.
